Chipu put in a spirited fight but were unable to edge Samoa, losing 34-25 in their opening World U20 Trophy encounter.

The national rugby Under 20 captain Michael Wamalwa is optimistic that the defeat to Samoa in their opening Pool B clash of the World U20 Trophy will spur them on to produce a positive result against Spain on Thursday.

Chipu lost 34-25 to Samoa in a match played at the Nyayo National Stadium. Wamalwa believes that “the exposure gained against Samoa” will enable his teammates to “know what to expect” against their Spanish counterparts.

“The boys have gained that experience and gained exposure. Now they know what to expect in our game against Spain,” Wamalwa said.

After Kenya started brightly, individual mistakes allowed Samoa to get back into the game and create a huge margin, but Kenya tried to fight back with two late tries which proved to be a too little, too late.

“After the first half in the changing rooms, we realized this is a team that is beatable and decided that we would play our hearts out in the second half. Time did not allow us, but we came back a bit too little too late.

“We awarded them all their tries. They took advantage of our mistakes. We will try and work more on that to be ready against Spain.”

Kenya will face Spain at 4:00 PM on Thursday, 20th July in their second match, before facing China Hong Kong at 12 PM five days later. Depending on where they finish in their pool, they will play their last match on 30th July.

Kenya are currently third with a negative nine points difference.
