Weru has revealed what the Shujaa youngster must do to hit Collins Injera's levels.

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has revealed what Dennis Abukuse needs to work on in order to become “the next Collins Injera”.

Abukuse’s star has been making a meteoric rise since the 2022 National Sevens Circuit. He has since moved on to becoming a Shujaa player and has arguably been the most valuable player so far at the 2023 circuit.

Weru however, believes that there is still room for improvement, citing that he needs to work on a few things in order to move to the next level.

“He is a good player who has good athletic abilities, good turn of pace, and footwork as a skill set,” Weru told Pulse Sports.

“He still has a long way to go in terms of his development. I have shared with him what he really needs to work on. We will try and support him as much as we can to go to the next level.”

Weru believes Abukuse needs to learn how to use his hands more effectively in contact situations the way he uses his feet to evade opposition pressure.

“If he can be able to use his hands in contact the way he uses his feet, he will be the next Injera in this country.

“I will give him all the support he needs and I am sure he will end up being stronger with time.”

Abukuse is a super confident player who at times can let temperament get the better of him, putting his team at risk of going a man down.

“I talked to him and told him that when you play at a high level, you need to hold your cool and make the right decisions. Making the wrong decisions affects not just a player, but as a team.

“We have had a discussion about that. I will continue to have that discussion around the whole squad and see how well I can mold him because it is my responsibility to make him get better in all aspects of the game.”

Oilers are set to travel to Nairobi to take part in the Christie sevens this weekend.
