Kayange considered taking up a coaching role with Shujaa before the administrative duties came calling but has not closed the door on the opportunity.

Former Kenya Sevens captain Humphrey Kayange has revealed he is open to being part of the coaching setup in some capacity in the future despite enjoying his administrative roles at the moment.

Kayange hung his boots up in 2016 after the Rio Olympics and has since been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.

Renowned for his leadership skills which are now being put to good use in various administrative roles including as a director of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and another as the male athletes representative for the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K).

Kayange has pursued a master's degree in sports administration management, which has helped him learn the ropes of administration roles in Kenya and it is an area that suits him well.

However, he considered taking up a coaching role before the administrative duties came calling.

“As players retire, everyone naturally talks about coaching. When Benja (Benjamin Ayimba) was coach, he had this masterplan and said, ‘Look, after you finish, I can take you under my tutelage for a while and then you will pick up because you understand the team,”  Kayange told Radull Live.

“I went ahead and did my coaching courses, but another opportunity arose that I felt would suit me. Of course, coaching is one area you can venture into, but there are lots of other areas including official coaching you can venture into.

“I would have loved to be part of the coaching setup with the sevens team, but that did not happen, so you have to adapt, change quickly, and see where another opportunity might arise.”

Kayange has revealed being part of the sevens coaching setup would be “a dream” he may consider realizing should it arise in the future.

“Being part of the team was my dream. If it comes later in my career, I will think seriously about it. If you have been part of the circuit for a long time, there are things that you can do which can impact the players coming through and then support them.”
