The side from Jinja came out as a surprise package by stunning the big boys to win their maiden title last year.
Along the way, they also won the Kyabazinga 7s which Walukuba Barbarians hosted in Bugembe.
The team’s head coach Saidi Atibu understands the task ahead, has cautioned about complacency, and said that his team come into this tournament with a fresh mind and zeal to win.
“We are not coming with the mindset of a defending champion but a fresh competitor so, expect no complacency because this is a new campaign that we want to fight and win,” Saidi Atibu, the Jinja Hippos coach told Pulse Sports.
Atibu understands that Jinja Hippos will be everyone’s target by virtue of being the defending champion but is confident his boys have what it takes to win.
“We’re looking at the top prize at the end of the season, and that means we must take every game in every circuit seriously. At the moment, we’re the team to beat, and everyone will come hard on us, but we’re mentally prepared to handle the pressure,” he added.
Hippos start in Group A alongside city rivals Walukuba, Kyambogo and Mongers.
