The Sugar Millers needed Jone Kubu’s penalty to win the title during a tightly-contested final at Mombasa Sports Club.

Kabras Sugar RFC are the Driftwood Sevens champions after beating Menengai Oilers 10-7 on sudden death in a tightly-contested cup final at the Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday.

Oilers drew first blood when Dennis Abukuse rounded off his markers to land a centre post try which was converted for a 7-0 lead but Kabras responded through Kenya Sevens star Kevin Wekesa, who also notched a converted try for a 7-7 tie at halftime.

However, no team was able to go over the line in the seven minutes of the second stanza, forcing the game into sudden death where Fiji-born Jone Kubu slotted in a penalty to win the exciting final 10-7 for Kabras.

Kabras made it to back-to-back finals after losing 17-5 to KCB in the season-opening Dala Sevens in Kisumu last weekend, while Oilers improved on their quarter-final exit last week.

The Kakamega-based side then went one better in Mombasa to collect all 22 points, especially after Dala Sevens champions KCB were knocked out at the semi-final by Oilers.

Oilers stunned KCB 17-12 in the semi-final to set up the meeting with Kabras, who overcame Strathmore Leos 12-7 in the other last four encounter.

Kabras registered three wins on the bounce to top their group and make it to the quarter-final where they beat Nondescripts 21-0 while Oilers edged Mwamba RFC 7-0 in the last eight.

Nondescripts had recovered from an opening defeat to KCB to secure second place in Pool A with victories over Nakuru (10-5) and Blak Blad (12-10) to make the cup quarters.

KCB, who beat Kisumu RFC 31-0 in the quarter-final, finished top of the pool with three wins, 22-0 against Nondescripts, 45-5 against Blak Blad, and 17-5 against Nakuru.

Strathmore Leos and Mwamba had topped pools C and D with the university students taking on Kenya Harlequin in the quarter-final which they won 22-0.

Following the win, Kabras now lead the National Sevens Circuit standings with 41 points from the first two rounds while Oilers, who managed sixth place at Dala Sevens, now have 31 after collecting 19 points in Mombasa.

The circuit will now take a three-week break for the World Rugby Under-20 Trophy set to take place in Nairobi from July 15-30 before resuming on August 5-6 in Nakuru for the Prinsloo Sevens when Kabras will be seeking back-to-back wins as they eye a first National Sevens title since 2017.
