Gibson Weru has made it a common occurrence to don sunglasses on math days but is there a ‘ritual’ behind it?

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has finally revealed why he always dons sunglasses on the touchline as his boys battle to get results on the pitch during Kenyan rugby weekends.

Weru, a former Shujaa player, has developed a reputation for being a coolly dressed gaffer during games ever since he decided to hang up his rugby boots to pursue a career in coaching.

It has become a common occurrence to see him donning caps, sunglasses and shorts as he instructs his players during matches, a cool fashion sense which practically defines his calm and collected demeanor.

Speaking to Pulse Sports, Weru revealed the real reason behind his fashion sense.

“It is just the sun that really affects my eyes. I cannot tolerate it so I have no option but to wear them,” Weru said in regards to the sunglasses.

“I do not do it out of fashion. I don't really have a choice but it is something I just tend to do because of my eyes.

“I have a couple in my car. Whichever are available are the ones that I wear.”

Most athletes are known to practice certain rituals before games as it could bring them some luck. Asked if wearing sunglasses has been his own sense of superstition, Weru responded.

“I do not believe in superstition. I do not believe in that at all. I believe that you get whatever you work for. If you put in hard work and you consistently do that, you get the result," he added.

“It is not a matter of wearing sunglasses or shorts, or wearing certain jeans or underwear that determines performance. It is all about hard work.”

Weru is the reigning National Sevens Circuit champion but he risks losing the title to either log leaders Kabras Sugar or KCB who have 80 and 78 points respectively, with two legs remaining.

Oilers are 24 points behind Kabras and have it all to do at the Tisap and Kabeberi Sevens.
