The Kenyan international has confidence in his side retaining their crown following their second place finish in Mombasa

Menengai Oilers star Denis Abukuse believes their good performance at last week’s Dala Sevens has set the tone for them to dominate and win the National Sevens Circuit crown.

Abukuse was named Most Valuable Player at the tournament in Mombasa after scoring six tries, including in the final when they lost 10-7 to Kabras Sugar in sudden death.

That was after scoring four in the group stages as well as one in the semi-final, his defense-splitting passes and good movement making life difficult for his opponents.

Following the two legs, the season-opening Dala and Driftwood Sevens, only teammate Beldad Ogeta (31) has more carries than Abukuse’s 27.

He is also second on the most line breaks with 12, just one behind Brunson Madigu of Strathmore Leos, and also only behind Strathmore’s Victor Mola on most tackles with 24, one less than the latter.

His good performance contributed a lot to Oilers registering a second-place finish at Dala and he feels the National Sevens Circuit champions are now on the right track to defend their title.

“They (coach Gibson Weru and technical staff) play a very key role in my performance and the teams in general. They always motivate on good and bad days. Like we never had a good outing in Kisumu during Dala but we regrouped as a team and corrected the errors, thanks to our able coaches,” Abukuse told Scrummage.

“As for now, the focus shifts to Prinsloo Sevens, apart from individual accolades and looking forward to helping Oilers win titles. Our performance as a team has improved and we are looking forward to better it and eventually winning the overall Sevens Series.”

Oilers were the biggest gainers at Driftwood when they collected 19 points, seven more than they managed from their sixth-place finish in Kisumu.

They head into the third leg in fourth place on the standings with 31 points and given they will be playing in their home city of Nakuru next, they will need no motivation.

Kabras occupy top spot with 41 points followed by KCB, who have 39, while Strathmore completes the top three with 31 points.
