Amonde has revealed how the current crop of Kenya 7s players have grown ahead of their Paris 2024 campaign.

Former Kenya 7s captain Andrew Amonde has revealed how the current crop of Shujaa players have grown over the last nine months as they prepare to try and achieve a podium place at the upcoming Paris 2024 edition which commences on Wednesday, 24th June.

Amonde, who retired at the end of the 2022/2023 Kenya Cup season, has been pivotal in the team’s preparations. He stands as a guiding figure, drawing from his extensive experience, including previous Olympic participations.

Alongside Herman Humwa and Vincent Onyala, Amonde is one of the few in the squad with Olympic experience, while the rest of the team is poised for their debut in this elite competition, having recently earned promotion back to the HSBC World 7s series.

Reflecting on the team's development under the guidance of head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua, Amonde expressed confidence in the squad's potential.

“Every sportsman looks forward to going to the Olympics and doing well at that stage. I have been privileged enough to take part in two tournaments before,” Amonde told Olympics Kenya.

“I think the lessons I learnt in the last two tournaments have played a big role in what we are trying to do with these boys. The mentorship and the growth we expect from them will be tested at the Olympics.”

Amonde’s tenure with Shujaa has seen both highs and lows. He captained the team to their historic victory at the Singapore World Series tournament in 2016 and navigated them through financially challenging times in the 2018/2019 season, narrowly avoiding relegation.

His insights into what the team needs to perform consistently at the elite level are clear: investment and support.

“If ever we want to grow and perform consistently at the elite level, we need to invest in the team,” Amonde emphasized.

“Based on the work we are doing, there is a lot that we expect from these boys, they have prepared well and we have been fully supported by our sponsors, NOC-K, KRU, and Tusker.

“I think all the motivation has been given to these boys, and the big thing for them now is to prepare well, focus on their final preparations here in Miramas, and go back to the Olympics and do the business.”

As Shujaa readies itself for Paris, the team’s growth under Amonde’s mentorship and the support of their coaching staff and sponsors will be crucial.

The journey to the podium is fraught with challenges, but with the right preparation and mindset, Shujaa aims to leave a significant mark on the Olympic stage.
