The Mwamba RFC tactician believes that the overall squad is “70 percent” ready for the Challenger Series and the Olympic games in 2024.
Kenya Sevens head coach Kevin Wambua believes that the team is still in progress despite emerging victors of the 2023 Safari Sevens played at the RFUEA Grounds last weekend.
Shujaa emerged victorious in the final, brushing aside Collins Injera’s Samurai 17-0 to retain the title they last won in 2021, which will put them in a good place ahead of the Dubai invitational tournament in December.
Wambua was in charge of both Shujaa and Morans, with the latter being a team dedicated to young upcoming Kenyan players who could make the step up to the senior setup in the future.
Wambua believes that the overall squad is “70 percent” ready for the Challenger Series and the Olympic Games in 2024.
“They (Morans) were unlucky in the last pool game against Germany but you saw how they played that last game (in the fifth place playoff) where they were efficient. For me, I will rate the overall team at 70 which is decent enough,” Wambua said in an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports.
“Yes, we can get to 90. It is a work in progress but I am satisfied with the overall performance of both teams.”

RUGBY Patrick Odongo-inspired Shujaa hammer Samurai to retain Safari Sevens title
Patrick Odongo continued his impressive run for Kenya Sevens as he led them to the Safari Sevens title following a 19-0 thrashing of Samurai
The youthful tactician is running out of superlatives to describe the level of camaraderie in the squad, insisting that the players are all hungry to make an impression on him in training.
“I think it is one team, Shujaa and Morans. There is a lot of competition in the team during our training and you can see that it is evident here. People push hard to get better.”
Wambua was looking forward to have both teams make at least the last four if possible, but Morans had to do with a fifth-place finish after failing to make the semi-finals following a narrow loss to Germany.

“For me, I am happy because it is a major tick in the boxes. Winning this tournament and not conceding any try in the final. The boys really played well. Yes, we can do better, but I am happy with the performance.”
“We were looking at a situation whereby both teams got to the final or at least, one team winning it and another in the semis.
“We fell short of one goal but the overall goal was retaining this tournament at home. A lot of guys have not seen this team playing at home and I think they did a fantastic job over the weekend.”
