Kenya Sevens won their second straight match in the World Rugby Sevens Series relegation playoff.

Kenya Sevens have boosted their chances of surviving relegation from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after winning their second playoff match following a 38-26 victory over Tonga in the London 7s on Saturday afternoon.

Kevin Wekesa was the star of the show yet again as he scored three tries in the nail-biting contest against the Pacific Island nation.

Wekesa scored Kenya’s opening try which was converted by Tony Omondi before he added another one soon after with Omondi again converting, for a 14-0 lead. Brian Tanga would then go over the whitewash, Omondi adding the extras, for a 19-0 lead before Tonga reduced the arrears with a converted try.

Wekesa would soon seal his hat-trick with Omondi’s conversion going through for a 26-7 lead in favour of Kenya at halftime. Captain Nelson Oyoo then showed great technique to extend Kenya’s lead with another converted try for a 31-7 lead after the break but a try for Tonga saw the advantage reduced to 31-12.

Kenya responded in style through Edmund Anya with Daniel Taabu adding the extras through his conversion to see them take a 38-12 lead but Tonga scored two converted tries for the 38-26 score.

Shujaa had started their campaign with a 29-24 win over Canada courtesy of Wekesa’s hat-trick.

Kenya were placed in Pool D alongside Uruguay, Canada, and Challenger Series champions Tonga with the four teams fighting for the final 12th slot of the 2023-2024 season which will adopt a new format.

Shujaa found themselves in the Promotion/Relegation Playoff after finishing 13th in the regular season with the 15th-ranked team (Japan) automatically relegated to the 2024 Challenger Series.

The 12th to 14th-ranked teams are facing off against the Challenger Series 2023 winner (Tonga) for the final position in the 2024 World Series. Kenya will now take on Uruguay in the final match and they must win to stay in contention of retaining their core status.
