The two cities in the West African countries shared several things in common.

As the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 kicks off on Saturday, there's growing excitement and a keen sense of anticipation among football lovers on the continent.

In the buildup to this major sporting event, several Nigerians have travelled to the host cities, including Pulse Sports' Hassan Abdulsalam, to cover the event.

Here are the striking similarities between Lagos, Nigeria, and Abidjan, which are intriguing in the context of the AFCON.

Similarities Between Lagos and Abidjan

Misconceptions as Capital Cities

Both Lagos and Abidjan are often mistakenly thought of as the capital cities of their respective countries. While Abidjan is the most populous city in Côte d'Ivoire, the actual capital is Yamoussoukro. Similarly, Lagos, despite being the most populous city in Nigeria, is not the capital; that title belongs to Abuja.

Population and Prominence

Lagos and Abidjan are the most populated and prominent cities in their respective countries. As of 2024, Lagos has a population exceeding 16 million, while Abidjan's population is over six million. This makes them central to both the economic and cultural activities of the countries.

Traffic Congestion

A common feature that Lagos and Abidjan share is the challenge of traffic congestion. The bustling streets and busy traffic are characteristic of both cities.

Since I arrived in Abidjan, the traffic has been overwhelming, just like in Lagos, and it made me remember the centre of excellence.

Public Transport Systems

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems to manage heavy urban traffic are in Lagos and Abidjan. These buses have been integral to navigating congested streets and have made transportation more accessible for people.

Urban Slums and Waste Management Issues

Like Lagos, Abidjan also has its share of slum areas and faces challenges with waste management. This similarity underscores the broader urban issues faced by major cities in Africa.
