Nigeria's youth football history includes five global titles at the U17 boys' level and two trips to the FIFA global Cup final at the U20 level. These accomplishments have earned them a unique invitation.
The Future Eagles practiced at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne for a week in order to be ready for the event. During that time, they played two games against Beyond Limits FC, the U16 team of the Remo Stars, winning one and losing the other.
Spain denies Future Eagles visa
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Spain denied the Future Eagles visa.
The statement by the NFF said, "Players and officials of the Nigeria U15 team, Future Eagles, have been denied visas by the Spanish Embassy and will therefore not be traveling to take part in the UEFA U16 Development Tournament starting on Friday."
During a two-match visit to Morocco only last month, Patrick Bassey's Future Eagles also won one and lost one of their matches against Moroccan teams. They lost the first game 2-3, but they rallied for a 5-3 victory in the second game in Kenitra.
The UEFA U16 Tournament will be held at the Pinatar Arena Football Centre in San Pedro del Pinatar. It will bring back fond memories of the UEFA-CAF U17 Meridian Tournament, which began in 1997 but was ended ten years later.
The schedule for this new event called for the Future Eagles to play England on Wednesday, April 17, at 1pm, Italy on Sunday, April 14, and Belgium on Friday, April 12.
