After making his debut in 1990, Adepoju was with the senior national team of Nigeria for 12 years.

Mutiu Adepoju's professional career
Before playing for the Super Eagles against Togo in August 1990, the "Headmaster" as Adepoju is known came up through the youth ranks.
At the FIFA U20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia, Adepoju scored three goals, which helped the Flying Eagles place second.
At the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, Adepoju was part of the Super Eagles team that won the tournament.
He was included in the teams to the FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998, and 2002.
He is known for scoring a stunning goal as the Super Eagles recorded a 3–2 victory over Spain at the 1998 World Cup.
Adepoju played in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, and Spain before his retirement from all in 2006.
