Flamingos captain Taiwo Afolabi has tipped this current squad to do better at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup than the Bronze medal at the last edition.
Nigeria 4-1 New Zealand
The Flamingos who won a bronze medal at the last edition in India started hot and took the lead as early as the second minute when Shakirat Abidemi Moshood converted a ball through by Harmony Chidi.
In the 13th minute, Khadijat Taiwo Adegoke scored the second for the Flamingos assisted by Faridat Abdulwahab.
Abdulwahab would score the third in the 28th minute assisted by Moshood.
The Flamingos went to the break with a three-goal lead and were more subtle in the second half.
In the 55th minute, the Flamingos got their fourth through Taiwo Tewogbola Afolabi assisted by Adegoke.
New Zealand would pull one back in the 60th minute, when Hannah Aimee Saxon scored assisted by Ela Jerez.
That would be the only goal of by the New Zealanders as the Flamingos held on for a comfortable win to start the tournament.
The Flamingos return to action in their second group game against Ecuador scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2024.
