After winning Tuesday's Women's Olympic Football Tournament final qualifying match in South Africa, Nigeria's victorious delegation returned home on Wednesday night, expressing gratitude to Nigeria's Charge d'Affaires at the Nigeria High Commission in Pretoria.

The Pride of Africa pushed deep to grind out a favorable scoreless draw that qualified Nigeria for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament for the first time in 16 years with a 1-0 victory over the Banyana Banyana in Abuja on Friday of last week.

While the majority of the players and Coach Randy Waldrum departed straight from Johannesburg for their various bases, eight players and the other team officials took a Wednesday night trip on South African Airways back to Lagos.

The Super Falcons were immediately dropped by South African Football Association officials, according to NFF Director of Competitions Ruth David, after Tunisian referee Dorsaf Ganouati's final whistle indicated that Nigeria, not South Africa, would be competing in Group C of this year's Olympic Tournament alongside Brazil, Spain, and Japan.

The Falcons advanced to France after a well-executed penalty kick by captain Rasheedat Ajibade split the top two African women's teams over the course of both games. The Banyana, who have only once been in the Olympics—in London twelve years ago—will not be returning.
