Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bolt has been celebrating Christmas with his community for the last 13 years and this year will not be different as he has planned a major treat for children.

Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt has never forgotten where he comes from and this has been on display every Christmas since 2010.

Born in Sherwood Content, the 38-year-old ensures children from his hometown have a treat every Christmas and it is a tradition that has been going on since 2010, a sign of appreciation and also giving back to the community that raised him before he became a global superstar.

Bolt spends Boxing Day at Waldensia Primary School, his local school, where children gather for some Christmas magic in a celebration that sees them mingle with the iconic sprinter while receiving some gifts from him.

"My team, my family and friends expect it to be amazing as usual," Bolt told the Jamaica Star of what he expects this year after hosting 300 children in 2023.

"A lot of gifts and fun activities to broaden the kids' smiles. My parents are greatly involved in the effort, too, so I'm looking forward to seeing them get into their element."

But why did Bolt find it necessary to celebrate Christmas with children from his hometown?

"Growing up in Sherwood Content, Christmas was always a great time for me receiving toys from my parents and seeing my family. I just feel all kids should experience this,” Bolt opened up on why he felt compelled to start the initiative.

"It's one of those emotions that you cannot really give a name to, it's a unique type of joy. Knowing that I grew up in the community and can return to just light up their day, it's a great feeling. My parents always made Christmas special for us. The family gatherings and laughter cannot be replaced. They always say that they are proud of me, and I am proud to be able to bring them some joy."

Bolt says Christmas is always a special time as it gives him an opportunity to connect with his community and rekindle the memories of his childhood.

“I love the season. I go home every Christmas to spend time with my family and friends. It's always a good time for me. We play dominoes, drop a double six here and there, share childhood memories; it's just a good vibe all around. I get to see old friends, some still living there, others return home to just be with family. It's like a big reunion each year,” he said.

"I want them to always remember where they are coming from, and to remember to give back. I want them to remember that where you're from is your roots, and like a tree, you must water it so that the branches can remain strong. My way is by giving back to the community."
