Jamie Carragher previously sparked controversy for disrespecting the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigerian Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has responded to Jamie Carragher’s now-infamous remarks about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), dismissing the Liverpool legend's opinion of Africa’s greatest footballing showpiece.
In a recent episode of the 90s Baby Show, Fireboy, real name Adedamola Adefolahan, did not hold back.

Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe Discloses Real Reason Behind Recent Hospital Admission
Eddie Howe has given an update on his health status after missing the 4-1 against Manchester United clash last weekend.
When asked about Carragher’s claim that AFCON is “not a major tournament”, Fireboy responded saying:
)
“AFCON is a major tournament to Africans and I think that’s what matters.”
)
The chart-topping singer, known for hits like Peru and Bandana, didn’t stop there, continuing, “Why should it matter what Jamie Carragher thinks? Carragher loves to talk. That’s how he makes his money. Leave that guy abeg.”
Fireboy also spoke on behalf of many Africans who have long felt their football achievements are dismissed on the global stage.
“It’s a major tournament to Africans. As a Nigerian, as an African football fanatic, it means a lot to me. I’m tuned in to watch every AFCON game. It’s a special moment for me, and it’s a lot like that with other Africans,” he said.
)
The Nigerian music star went further to make a passionate call for internal development in the continental showpiece: “Let us build our own structure and make it better.”
Carragher’s defence following controversial AFCON remarks
)
Carragher first made his comments several weeks ago while analysing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or prospects.
The Liverpool legend argued that playing in AFCON places Salah at a disadvantage, suggesting even if the Egyptian legend won the tournament and was named Player of the Tournament, “it would still not be enough to secure him the award.”
After facing backlash from African legends including Jay-Jay Okocha, John Mikel Obi, and Emmanuel Adebayor, Carragher issued a public apology via social media.
“What I would never want to be described as a pundit is ignorant and disrespectful. That was never my aim,” he said, admitting that “I was clumsy with my language.”
Yet, in classic pundit fashion, Carragher doubled down, telling CBS Sports:
“There’s five major tournaments out there besides the World Cup... but some of them don’t resonate with the people who vote for the Ballon d’Or. That was not an opinion, that was a fact.”
His attempt to clarify seems to have done little to stem the criticism.
