In 2024, many of the world’s leading table tennis players, particularly Chinese players, have enjoyed a lot of success, winning medals and breaking records.
Table tennis’s profile on the world stage continues to grow. The sport is going from strength to strength thanks largely to the players who compete at the highest levels and promote the sport to others. Throughout 2024, many of the world’s leading table tennis players have enjoyed a lot of success, winning medals, breaking records, and ranking in the highest positions on leaderboards. There are quite a few stand-out players who have done exceptionally well in 2024, and here are five of them.
Wang Chuqin
There’s no denying that China is producing more top table tennis players than any other country in the world right now. Many people who follow the sport will be familiar with many Chinese players. The same can be said for those who place bets on their favorite players and teams; before betting, they check out the latest table tennis betting odds so they can place the best bets. Wang Chuqin is one of many players who attract bets.
This is because he’s currently ranked the top male table tennis player in the world, with a win rate of 89%. The 24-year-old has been playing for his country’s national team since 2015 and has competed in many of the sport’s major competitions and tournaments, winning a string of medals in the process. 2024 was a great year for Wang as he secured two golds at the Summer Olympics: these were for the men’s team table tennis event and the mixed doubles table tennis event.
Sun Yingsha
Sun Yinghsa is currently the world’s highest-ranking female table tennis player, boasting a win rate of 92%. She’s been playing for China’s national women’s team since 2017 and has won no fewer than two dozen gold medals throughout her career. In 2024, she cemented her status as the leading female table tennis player by winning five World Table Tennis tournaments, earning a gold medal for mixed doubles at the Summer Olympics, and winning women’s singles at the Table Tennis World Cup.
Fan Zhengdong
China won all five of the gold medals at the Summer Olympics, with Fan Zhengdong winning gold for Men’s Singles. He joined the Chinese national table tennis team back in 2012 and was its youngest member at the time. Because of his talent and commitment to table tennis, he ended up becoming a major name in the sport and was the youngest-ever World Table Tennis Champion. As well as this, ranked second in the world for 29 months before finally securing the top spot in April 2018.
2024 has been another great year for Fan Zhengdong. When he won gold at Paris, it was the first time he had won an individual gold medal at an Olympic event. It also made him the sixth man to complete the table tennis Grand Slam. This is because as well as winning an individual Olympic gold, he had previously won individual titles at the World Cup and World Championships.
Chen Meng
Another table tennis player from China who’s had a run of successful events in 2024 is Chen Meng. She’s been playing for her country’s national team since 2007, after joining it when she was just 13. Throughout her career, she’s won a string of individual, doubles, and team titles, including the 2020 World Cup (singles).
Chen was ranked as the top female table tennis player in the world in January 2018. Though she’s currently slipped down in the ranking and is at 24, she’s still had a brilliant 2024 and deserves to be recognized as one of the top players. When she won her gold medal at the Summer Olympics, it was the second time she’d won an Olympic gold in singles.
Hugo Calderano
What’s particularly exciting about table tennis is that Chinese players are undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. This is great because it encourages those from other countries to do their best, hoping to clinch a medal or two for their own country. Lots of non-Chinese players have been rising up the ranks and one in particular is Hugo Calderano. The 28-year-old Brazilian player is certainly one to watch.
Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Calderano has broken several records thanks to his recent successes in the sport. In fact, he’s arguably the best table tennis player from the Americas, at least according to international rankings. When he was ranked at number 3 in 2022, this was the highest ranking ever for someone from North or South America. He’s also placed highly in several major international tournaments and competitions. 2024 has been a brilliant year for the Brazilian player as he won gold in the singles event at the 2024 Pan American Table Tennis Championships, which brought his ranking back up to 3.
