Quadri Aruna will begin his quest at the 2025 ITTF World Cup in Macao as the only Nigerian in the competition.

Nigeria's star table tennis player, Quadri Aruna, returns to the global stage as the nation's only representative at the 2025 ITTF World Cup in Macao.

The world number 20 and Africa's second-ranked player is set to face Benin Republic's Abdel-Kader Salifou today at the Galaxy Arena.

Quadri Aruna has now lost back-to-back to the Romanian star.

Aruna shares 1290 ranking points with his long-standing Egyptian rival Omar Assar, who sits just above him at 19th.

His opening opponent, Salifou, 35, enters the tournament as the lowest-ranked player at 117th with 175 points. While the statistics heavily favor the Nigerian on paper, Aruna is acutely aware of the pressure that comes with World Cup expectations and the razor-thin margins that often decide matches at this elite level.

A decade ago, in 2014, Aruna recorded his name in history by becoming the first African to reach the quarterfinals of the ITTF World Cup. His signature aggressive forehand and lightning-fast gameplay remain his hallmarks, and the Macao event presents another opportunity for him to chase further milestones.

Joining Aruna in the men's singles draw are Egypt's Assar and Mohamed El-Beiali, alongside Cameroon's rising star Ylane Batix, who, at just 19, makes history as the first male player from Cameroon to qualify for the prestigious tournament.

The women's competition features a strong African contingent led by Egypt's teenage prodigy Hana Goda, nine-time Africa Cup champion Dina Meshref, and emerging talent Mariam Alhodaby.

However, Nigeria will be notably absent in the women's singles as Fatimo Bello was unfortunately forced to withdraw due to visa complications.

Bello, one of four African women who had qualified for the World Cup, was unable to secure the necessary visa to travel to China, despite being based in Italy.

According to the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, her application was denied by the Chinese Embassy in Lagos. Despite initial listing by the ITTF, Bello has been replaced in the draw by Hong Kong's Chengzhu Zhu.

The former Olympian earned her World Cup spot by finishing among the top four at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup in Tunis. The NTTF confirmed that Bello had remained hopeful of a resolution through diplomatic channels until the weekend. Sadly, she will now have to wait until 2026 for her World Cup debut.

The ITTF Singles World Cups return to the Galaxy Arena in Macao from April 14th to 20th, 2025, bringing together the pinnacle of global table tennis talent.
