The championship serves as a qualifier for the 2023 African Championship, slated for September in Tunis.

Eight teams from the West Africa region will compete in four different events - men's (singles and team) and women's (singles and team), while US-based Ghana's sensation Felix Lartey is set to dazzle in front of the home fans.

Benin Republic, Liberia, Senegal, and Togo will accompany Nigeria, the region's heavyweight, to the event this year.

The Championship will help select players for the Africa Games - GTTA

According to GTTA President Mawuko Afadzinu, the winner will be used by the host to choose athletes for the next Africa Games the following year.

In comparison to Nigeria's performance from the previous year, Afadzinu said when we won one silver and one bronze, we needed to be able to double or perhaps triple that.

"So this will be another opportunity for us to select players for the upcoming African games next year. The chance is here, let's take it.

“We should be able to double or possibly quadruple our performance compared to Nigeria last year when we won one silver and one bronze.

“We are going out confidently. The other beautiful thing about our team is the blend of generations with young and experienced players, so that is a fusion of experience and youth which should pay off very well.

“We are looking at our ladies and gents being given the opportunity to try out their talent against the best of West Africa and come out on top. We are pretty confident and hopeful and looking forward to Monday,” he added.

Pulse Sports reports that Nigeria is the home of table tennis in the region.
