Stefan Mengel has progressed to the quarterfinal of the ongoing World Table Tennis Contender in Lagos.

Mengel enjoyed the atmosphere during his Round of 16 clash against Anders Lind, winning 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-2) at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The German highlighted a deep bond he experienced when competing in Lagos. He also distributed presents to the enthusiastic young fans at the location.

He said, "I've been here since 2019, and then felt a warm welcome. People were very nice, friendly, and enthusiastic.

"It's something we don't have in Europe. During the board, match, everyone is cheering and supporting and screaming. Back in the time, you just go for tournaments, but this time, I was looking down the basement for some shirts and rubbers as a gift to the fans.

"I feel they appreciate and support me. l am so happy about the support today as the complete hall was on my side supporting me."

Next on the cards, Mengel will face Ricardo Walther in the quarterfinal clash on Saturday.
