Rose Nana emerged as the champion at the Lagos Schools' Tennis Championship, which was held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos.

The 9-year-old player, a product of Kay-Kay Tennis Academy, defeated her rival, Mofifunoluwa Atilola, twice to win the championship.

She defeated Atilola in the Girls U-10 finals before fighting back from a set down to defeat the same opponent to clinch the Girls U-14 title a few hours later.

Recall that in a rematch of their match in the FAAN Junior Tennis Championship in Ikeja, Lagos, a few months ago, both players who performed admirably throughout the competition, advanced to the finals of two different age divisions, the Girls U-10 and U-14 events.

In the Girls U-18 Final, Destiny Okhinaye defeayed Blessing Otu to emerge victorious. She overcame a set deficit to win the match in a decisive fourth set.

When Okhinaye jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and eventually forced her opponent to withdraw while leading 6-1 in the tie break decider for the short sets match, the match which had seemed dull for minutes after Otu had won the first set 4-2 came to life.

In the boys categories, Ajao Basit and Taofik Mogaji slugged it out in the boys U-18 finals, with the former emerging victorious after delivering some sumptuous tennis on the day.

Other winners in the competition include Oyo State's Onyekachi Ogumjiofor, who defeated David Edwards in the boys U-14 final, while Michael Osagie was the better player when he squared up against Mohamed Okandeji in the boys U-10 final.

Organizers are happy with the kids performance

The organizer of the championship, the Allison & Oluremi Ayida Foundation, was filled with awe for the athletes and the level of competitiveness, which he thought was just the beginning of much bigger things.

Laolu Akerele, who represented the organizers, revealed this to journalists after the final games.

He said, "This was a really beautiful competition, and you could see how competitive the kids were out there.
