His impressive accomplishment of reaching No. 3 in the USTA Boys' 18s division demonstrated his competitive nature and outstanding performance on a national scale and his unmistakable talent translated into the doubles circuit when he clinched the 2019 USTA Boys’ demonstrating his versatility and ability to thrive in in singles or with a partner.

In addition, he placed second in the renowned 2020 USTA Boys' 18s Singles Winter Nationals, enhancing his standing as one of the nation's best prospects. Having considered American football, Shelton ultimately chose tennis, and became a pro in 2022, participating in his first Grand Slam at the 2022 US Open. 

He made headway at a major for the first time at the 2023 Australian Open, reaching the tournament's last eight before losing to countryman Tommy Paul. The youngster advanced to a maiden semi-final in only his second US Open appearance — becoming the youngest American man to advance to the last four in New York since Michael Chang in 1992 — before losing to Novak Djokovic in his home Slam.

A month after losing to the 24-time Grand Slam champion, Shelton notched his first Tour-level title at an ATP 500 event in Tokyo, defeating Aslan Karatsev 7-5, 6-1 in the decider. He has since followed that up with a win on home turf in Houston, beating compatriot and defending champion Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
