The tournament which begins on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, will feature players from 12 states across the country.

The UTR tournament is a unique system that allows players to compete locally and earn points globally.

These points are recognised worldwide and help measure each player's level, with the highest-rated UTR players having 16 points.

Why the tournament

According to TPPA President, Mr. Segun Aluko, the tournament aims to provide regular competition opportunities for young players.

"The idea is for the kids to play regular tournaments across different times of the year.

“We are also conscious of their academics, so we don't fix the tournaments at times that will impede their studies,” he said.

Tournament schedule

The tournament will be held in two legs, with the first leg taking place in February and early March 2025, in 12 centre across Nigeria, including Ilorin, Kano, Abuja, Minna, Ibadan, Owerri, Benin, Port Harcourt, Jos, Uyo, Abeokuta, and Lagos.

The second leg of the regional qualifiers will hold in March 2025, while the national grand finale will take place in Lagos in April 2025.

Mr. Jude Osaji, an executive member of the TPPA, explained that the regional events will help players earn UTR rankings, while the national tournament will provide even higher ratings.

"The ratings are automatic, and even when these kids get the opportunity to play ITF events or other tournaments in that cadre, it also reflects on their UTR points," he said.

Coach Paul Moses, a renowned tennis coach in Nigeria, praised the TPPA event, saying it provides young players with essential competition experience.

"The beauty of the UTR tournament organized by the TPPA is that these kids get to play more tournaments, and that is very essential for every tennis player, especially at that stage," he said.

The tournament will feature competitions in the boys and girls 12, 14, and 16 categories, with Lagos also hosting the youth category during the regional events.
