KCCA have entered the race for top spot in the women’s National Volleyball League after defeating table leaders Ndejje Elites Sunday morning.
Shilla Omuriwe’s charges were five points behind the log leaders but reduced the deficit to a mere two points with a commanding 3-1 victory at the Old Kampala Arena.
The fight for the top four is squarely amongst four sides, Ndejje, Sport-S, KCCA and OBB but there is a small matter of positions to decide the semi-final match ups.
Victory for the defending champions today, or even a point would have left them in pole position to finish the regular season as the top seed.
But defeat hands the advantage to Sport-S, who are level on points with the university side two games to the end of the second round.
The Kasasiro Girls, who started on the front foot, were dominant in the fourth set as Ndejje tried to force a decisive.
Ndejje’s fight back in the second set, which they won 26-24, was inspired by Catherine Ainembabazi’s powerful attacks on offence.
But with limited options in attack, the university side paid the price as KCCA avenged that first round defeat.
Three unanswered points to start the third set for KCCA were followed by a Ndejje response to lead 05-03.
The KCCA block, however, made life hard for Ndejje through the last two sets.
KCCA took those 26-24 and 25-14 to condemn Ndejje to their second loss of the season.
With two games left in the regular season, both Sport-S and Ndejje are tied on 29 points but it is Malic Damulira’s side who have a better sets ratio.
That will play a big part in the end should the two sides register identical results from their remaining two games.
KCCA have now moved to 27 points, just two behind the joint top sides.
Depleted Elites
Ndejje were playing without head coach Ronald Kitosi for the first time this season.
Kitosi has travelled to Germany for a coaching course and will be away the next five months.
In hi absence, Sadat Wagumba and Jensen Chestit took charge.
The team was also without the experienced Christine Alupo. The centre blocker is also out of the country for further studies in China.
Jackline Jerop has also been away since the Christmas break and that has left the Elites short on numbers.
