The Dockers bowed out at the same stage last year in Tunis.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) were bundled out of the 2023 men’s African Volleyball Club Championships on Thursday after losing 3-1 ( 27-25,21-25,18-25 22-25) to Port Douala of Cameroon.

The Dockers hoped to go past the Cameroonian side who had denied them advancing to the semifinals last year in Tunisia.

This was the third time that KPA failed to surpass the last eight, having also bowed out at the same stage in 2021.

Sammy Mulinge’s coached side will now shift focus to five-eight playoffs in the tournament being played in Kelibia, Tunisia.

Before the match, Mulinge admitted that he was wary of the threat posed to Port of Douala and other teams from now on in the tournament.

“This is a tough competition. Each team is out to make a difference. You lose the grip you have. This is the quarter-finals and a lot is at stake,” the coach told reporters.

On their way to the quarter-finals, KPA eliminated Chief Naval Staff Spikers of Nigeria 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22).

The Dockers had topped their pool after defeating Cameroon Sports Volleyball Club 3-1 and Iseg Sport (ISE) of Senegal 3-1 before they fell to Jill Saad Commune Ouled Aduone (JSCOA) of Algeria 3-2.

In 2022, Port Douala of Cameroon eliminated KPA after beating them 3-0(25-17,25-15,25-17) in the tournament played in Tunisia.

KPA squad: Elijah Bosire, Titus Kibet, Joshua Kimaru, Micah Lemoi, David Thiut, Wilson Cheruiyot, Jeffery Ochieng’, Nyabera Brian, Sam Khahoya, Michael Chemos, Chris Owalla, Fredrick Muiruri, Dennis Omollo, and Peter Kamara.
