Kenya’s men volleyball team are keen to reach where they have not managed before at the continental championships that serves off in Egypt on Sunday
Kenya men’s volleyball team Wafalme have set themselves an ambitious semi-final target at the CAVB Africa Nations Championships that serves off in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday.
Wafalme arrived in Cairo on Friday ahead on Saturday night’s draw where Kenya will know who they will face in the continental championships but coach Gideon Tarus has set an ambitious target which the country has never achieved before.
Kenya have never gone past the quarter-final stage with their best being a fifth place at the 2007 edition and could only manage ninth in the last tournament in 2021.
“We have had good preparations and the boys have shown they are ready in the last three weeks. We want to have a good start in the tournament, that is why he have organised for a friendly match with Morocco just to gauge ourselves and to help the players acclimatise to the indoor arena before the opening match,” Tarus told Nation in Cairo.
“I have talked to my boys and told them we need to stay focused and avoid getting carried away. We don’t want to make the mistakes of the last edition when we struggled to beat Egypt then lost a crucial match against Morocco which denied us a place in the quarter-final.”
Unlike their female counterparts the Malkia Strikers, who had an FIVB-sponsored three-week High-Performance training camp in Morocco before going to claim the women’s version of the competition in Cameroon last month, Wafalme have had to contend with preparations locally.
They, however, remain confident of upsetting the formbook in Cairo even if they are up against strong opposition.
Wafalme organised a friendly match with Morocco on Saturday in a bid to further sharpen their skills while getting used to the Cairo International Stadium where the competition will be held.
